HydroDot Introduces StatNet
Breakthrough product allows EEG in minutes.
Westford MA (June 23, 2010)—HydroDot, Inc., a developer of innovative electroencephalography (EEG) systems, is introducing the new revolutionary StatNet™ single-use disposable EEG headpiece. StatNet is nothing short of a paradigm shift, transforming EEG from an antiquated, unsanitary process and bringing it into the 21st Century.
The StatNet is a novel flexible headpiece with integrated EEG electrodes. The electrodes are precision-aligned in the headpiece, and they can be applied very quickly with accuracy and confidence. StatNet will allow any medical personnel to perform EEGs in minutes, rather than waiting for trained EEG technologists to arrive.
Kathleen Principe, President of HydroDot, told reporters, "The StatNet will literally save lives. Over 10 million people arrive at American emergency rooms (ERs) annually, and a significant proportion of those patients have some sort of neurological problem, perhaps epileptic seizure, stroke, or head trauma. With StatNet, an EEG can be performed immediately, providing doctors with the information they need to begin the proper treatment much more quickly."
EEGs record electrical activity in the brain and are used for many purposes including testing for epilepsy, stroke, and traumatic brain injury, monitoring brain function in adult, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (ICU, NICU, PICU), emergency rooms (ER), for sleep studies, during emergency transport, during carotid endarterectomy, and other uses. The potential uses of EEGs are far broader than current applications, but their uses have been restricted by shortages of qualified technologists to administer EEGs, and by lengthy set-up times, among many other problems.
The patented StatNet takes advantage of state-of-the-art pliable printed circuit technology. Instead of a jumble of 20 or so lead wires attached to individual reusable electrodes, StatNet's electrodes are pre-gelled elongated silver sliver-chloride sensors integrated into the headpiece, and the electrical signals are transmitted via a single cable to any standard EEG recording device. "Any healthcare professional can apply the StatNet," says Principe, who is a registered EEG technologist, "and it works through virtually any type of hair, long or short, yielding high quality EEG results."
Principe sees the main application of the StatNet in the ER and intensive care unit (ICU), where many patients have sub-clinical seizures that may be difficult to diagnose and can go undetected, and where rapid diagnosis and treatment can have a significant impact on patient outcome. StatNet can also be used in emergency field situations, for example by emergency medical technicians at the scene of an accident or by trainers on the athletic field.
Besides speed, the StatNet also offers safety. It is the first fully disposable EEG electrode system, so patients will not be vulnerable to the myriad of hospital borne infections that traditional reusable EEG electrodes can transmit.
John McPeck, Chairman of HydroDot, Inc., says, "StatNet signals a whole new era in EEG. After 50 years, most technologists still perform EEGs the same way as their predecessors, with reusable electrodes and no consistent way of cleaning them. HydroDot is bringing EEG into the 21st century, and we’re going to make a difference in people’s lives."
